The route follows the A4 Milan–Venice motorway to the Desenzano exit. It is the most versatile exit on the lower lake: besides Desenzano it also serves Padenghe, Moniga, Manerba, Salò, Gardone, Toscolano, Gargnano and Tignale. If your hotel sits on the Brescia shore north of Desenzano, this is still your exit.
From central Milan the drive is straightforward — ring road, then A4 eastbound. From Linate the advantage is geographic: the airport is already on Milan's eastern side, so you join the A4 without crossing the city. Malpensa sits on the opposite side, so that journey is noticeably longer because you have to get around Milan first.
One practical note about the final stretch: the lower Garda exits are periodically affected by closures tied to high-speed rail works, with the Sirmione exit among the most affected. When that happens, Desenzano becomes the natural alternative. Your driver checks conditions before departure and picks the cleaner approach — your agreed fare does not change.
Since 1 February 2026 Desenzano has applied a new experimental limited-traffic-zone scheme covering the historic centre, Rivoltella and the lakefront. Driving inside the ZTL is permitted Monday to Friday from 06:00 to 10:00 for vehicles authorised by the Local Police only; after 10:00 vehicles must leave the area.
The part that matters if you are arriving by transfer: guests of hotels and holiday rentals can be covered by temporary authorisations limited to loading and unloading luggage. In practice that means pulling up outside your accommodation is possible but has to be arranged — it is not open parking. Stopping is otherwise allowed only for as long as strictly necessary, in designated spaces.
The Tuesday weekly market brings temporary changes to traffic in some central squares and streets. If you are arriving on a Tuesday morning, tell us when you book so we plan the right drop-off point.

Desenzano's port is the main hub on the lower lake, with daily departures to every major Garda destination. The navigation office is on Piazza Matteotti, right by the centre.
The station is called Desenzano del Garda–Sirmione and sits on the Milan–Venice line, but it serves two separate towns: Sirmione is about 9 km away and still needs onward transport.
The lakefront falls inside the limited-traffic zone along with the old town and Rivoltella — this is where the drop-off point needs arranging in advance rather than improvising on arrival.
Lake Garda's boat service is run by Navigarda, part of the Navigazione Laghi network, which has operated on the lake since 1827. Twelve stops are served on the Lombardy shore: Desenzano, Gardone Riviera, Gargnano, Isola del Garda, Limone, Manerba, Moniga, Salò, Padenghe, Porto Portese, Sirmione and Toscolano-Maderno.
The fleet runs motorboats on short hops — such as the Desenzano–Sirmione crossing — plus hydrofoils and catamarans for the upper-lake resorts. It is why many guests use Desenzano as a base: one transfer in, then travel by water.
