Varenna sits on the eastern shore of Lake Como, and that changes the route entirely compared with the western-shore towns. You do not go via Como: the drive follows the SS36 Milan–Lecco–Sondrio, the fast road running along the Lecco arm of the lake.
That difference matters. Bellagio, on the promontory opposite, is reached along narrow winding lakeside roads; Varenna is served by a dual-carriageway almost to the edge of the village. Arriving with luggage from Malpensa or Linate, the run is more direct and the timing far more predictable.
The SS36 bypasses the village in tunnel: Varenna itself sits below the road, down towards the water. At the entrance to the village there is a large multi-storey paid car park — useful to know if you are renting a car, much less relevant arriving by transfer, since we agree your drop-off point with you in advance.
Varenna's centre falls under a limited traffic zone covering Piazza San Giorgio and the surrounding streets, with access controlled by electronic barriers. Permits are issued by category — property owners and parking holders, hospitality businesses, service operators — through the comune or the Local Police office.
The constraint that bears most directly on a transfer is not the permit but vehicle size: the historic centre bars passenger vehicles with more than eight seats, goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, and unauthorised vehicles longer than 5 metres. A minivan does not fit everywhere, and that is exactly the kind of detail worth settling beforehand rather than at the barrier.
In practice: send us the exact address of the hotel or villa and we work out the nearest workable drop-off point in advance. In most cases you arrive within a short walk of the door — but the approach needs planning, not improvising.

A former monastery turned residence, now a house museum with a botanical garden running along the shoreline. It is the village's best-known sight and an easy walk from the centre.

The station is called Varenna–Esino–Perledo, opened in 1892 and actually located in Perledo. It serves Varenna but also Esino Lario, a dozen kilometres away. Regional trains on the Lecco–Colico–Sondrio line call here, as do RegioExpress services on the Milan–Lecco–Sondrio–Tirano route.
Varenna is one of the four landings on the central-lake car ferry: the vehicle-carrying service runs only between Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio and Cadenabbia. The crossing to Bellagio takes roughly 15–20 minutes. Car ferries take no reservations — boarding is first come, first served.
It is why many guests take one transfer to Varenna and then move around by boat: crossing the lake is quicker than driving around it. Current timetables are on the Navigazione Laghi site.
